I always seem to top the ball with my 3 and 5 woods off the fairway.  I can hit them just fime off the tee.  What am I doing wrong?

The key to hitting the ball off the grass with a fairway wood is to strike the ball at the lowest point of your swing.  You first need to check your alignment.  Fairway woods should be played slightly inside your front inseam.  See this page for an example:

The other thing is to make sure you that you are not trying to lift the ball.  Let the clubhead do the work and get the ball in the air.  Make sure you don't try to swing up at it or to scoop at it with your wrists.
