Advanced Set Selection

Advanced Golfer's Profile:

Your game is consistent and strong but could use a little fine tuning. Now it's more about shaping your shots than just hitting them solid. Mots of your shots are struck pretty solid now anyhow. Now its about being able to work the ball's flight and control its trajectory better. You can usually hit 8-10 greens or in regulation, but to hit the rest you'll probably need some clubs that you can really feel.

Your drives are pretty accurate and consistent, but adding a little more yardage would be nice. Reaching the par 5's in 2 is doable, but could be a bit easier if you were just a bit longer off the tee.

The long irons are still inconsistent, you can manage it with them, although they're not giving you the results you'd like. Longer shots into the green, 200-230 yards out or so, are still a bit a of challenge.

Hitting the green from inside 100 yards is not much of a problem. Getting it close to the pin is the concern now. Maybe tweaking the wedges a bit can give you the tools you need to attack the pin.

The Ideal Set

An advanced player's ideal set of clubs starts with some Players Irons. These irons have a thinner topline and less perimeter weighting. Players irons have a more traditional look with little offset. It is easier to draw the ball (right to left) and fade the ball (left to right) with these irons. Just what the advanced player needs, you can really feel the ball and you know where it is going.

Your driver would have less loft (9-10 degrees is optimal for most) to help maximize distance. Its very important to have the proper shaft for your swing speed and ball flight. Custom fitting and testing various shaft and loft configurations may be needed to find the perfect driver for you.

The fairway woods and long irons are no longer to be feared. They are the difference makers when attempting to reach those long par 4s and par 5s in two. It may be a good idea to get a nice 3 wood for reaching the par 5s and a 2 hybrid for targeting the greens with a high, soft-landing, approach on the long par 4s. Once again, custom club fitting could be the key.

You want the most options possible when it comes to your wedges. Having the right set of wedges with various combinations of loft, feel and bounce will help you attack the pin from anywhere around the green. Take a look at our Wedge Guide to find out which 3 or 4 wedges will be best for your game.

As an advanced golfer, custom club fitting of shafts, length, lie angle, and loft becomes critical. It is important that you can cover every 10-15 yards down from your longest club and control the trajectory of any shot you may need to hit.

Set configuration - Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 3 hybrid, Players Irons 4-9, pitching wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge and putter.
