Golf Shoe Types
There are basically four different types of golf shoes on the market today.
Classic Golf Shoes have come along way in the past decade. Today's golf shoes offer the best in comfort, traction, style, breathability, and waterproofing technology. The classic golf shoe comes in many varieties such as waterproof, cold-weatherproof, lightweight, and in many styles and colors.
Golf Sneakers are becoming increasingly popular with the average golfer as they are usually the most comfortable. Especially good for those golfers who prefer to walk the golf course.
Golf Sandals are a relatively new trend in the golf shoe market. These sandals are very lightweight and breathable. Great for summer golf at courses with "relaxed" dress codes.
Golf Boots are modeled after hiking boots and are designed for golfers who want to play in some of nature's nastier conditions. The golf boot is also a good choice for golfers who need the extra ankle support that a boot provides.
Golf Shoe Materials
The classic golf shoe was always a leather shoe, but modern shoe innovations have allowed for a much broader range of golf shoe material. Some of the more popular materials for golf shoes are listed below.
Leather is still the top choice for golf shoes because of its breathability and waterproofing. Leather golf shoes are usually the most sylish, especially those with the classic saddle design. Leather golf shoes are an excellent choice for most golfers.
Goretex is one of the best weatherproof materials on the planet. Goretex and similar materials are waterproof and provide maximum comfort on colder days. However, because of the materials thickness, it may not be the best choice for golfing in hot or humid climates.
Synthetics - Other synthetic materials can offer various degrees of waterproofing and breathability, often at a cheaper price than that of leather or goretex.
Golf Shoe Spikes
Golf shoe spikes are engineered to provide the golfer with maximum traction on the golf course, especially in wet or slick conditions. There are basically three types of golf shoe spikes, metal, soft spikes, and spikeless. Most golf courses today have instituted a policy banning metal spikes, as they can easily tear up the greens, so it is usually a good idea to go with soft spikes or spikeless golf shoes.
Soft Spikes are usually made of a synthetic rubber known as polyurethane. Polyurethane is used because it is durable and firm, yet forgiving enough not to damage the greens the way metal spikes do. The problem with soft spikes is that they do not provide as much traction as metal spikes, nor do they last as long. It is a good idea to replace your soft spikes when they begin to wear down. Since most golf courses will only allow soft spikes now it is a good idea to find some that are going to perform up to par. For optimum spike performance, GolfSpyder recommends
SOFTSPIKES Black Widow Large Plastic Thread Spikes - Set of 22
Metal Spikes are the choice of most touring pros as they provide maximum traction. However, most golf courses are no longer allowing the use of metal spikes because of the damage they cause to the greens and fairways.
Spikeless Golf Shoes are increasing in popularity. Spikeless golf shoes offer superior comfort while still providing very good traction and stability, all without the hassle of having to replace spikes.
