Golf Terms
Ace - Making a hole-in-one.
Address - Taking your stance and preparing to make a swing.
Adjusted Gross Score - Adjusted score after your handicap stroke allowance is applied.
Albatross - Three under par on a hole.
Approach Shot - Taking a shot at landing the ball on the green.
Away - The ball furthest away from the hole. Golf etiquette dictates that this ball should be played first.
Back Nine - aka "Coming In" - The final nine holes on a golf course.
Backspin - aka "Bite" - Reverse rotation of the golf ball that helps stop the ball on the green.
Barkie - aka "Woody" - Having your ball hit off of a tree and still managing to make par.
Beach - A sand trap.
Birdie - One under par on a hole.
Bogey - One over par on a hole. Double, triple, or quadruple bogey would be 2,3, or 4 over par, respectively.
Bunker - A trap that can be filled with either sand or grass designed as a way to penalize an errant approach or tee shot.
Bump and Run - A low trajectory chip shot that lands early and rolls most of the way to the hole.
Carry - The distance the ball travels in the air from the time it is struck until the time it first lands. Does not include roll.
Carry Over - A skin or point amount that is not won on a hole can be "carried over" and added to the next hole's value.
Casual Water - Standing water which is not part of a water hazard. Relief may be taken without penalty.
Chili-Dip - Dipping your knees during your swing causing you to hit the ground before striking the ball. Results in a weakly hit and usually off line shot.
Chip Shot - A short shot from just off the green in which the ball is "chipped" up in the air slightly and allowed to roll on the green.
